Our House in the Algarve is located in the middle of the Algarve, the coastal region in southern Portugal, on the outskirts of the town of Sao Bartolomeu de Messines. From Faro (42 km) you can reach the 150 meter high hill by car in about 35 minutes. The 950 m2 large, beautiful garden is biologically maintained. There are remains of an authentic windmill in the garden, surrounded by an orchard and there are plenty of places and seats to enjoy the peace, flowers, birds, the swimming pool and the view.
From the kitchen you have a view of the covered garden terrace.
Dogs and cats are not allowed.
Smoking is also not permitted in our house.
The location of the cottage "O Cima do Mundo" (the top of the world) is not only very beautiful; the house is also fully equipped. In addition to a nice living room with pellet stove, there is a separate spacious and bright dining room / conservatory with a beautiful view of the garden. The original cottage has been expanded but remains of special design and is a wonderful place to relax or just to spend a nice holiday. With around 135 m2 there is enough space to stay with (a maximum of) eight adults and a baby. There are three bedrooms (including a large room of 22 m2). In the large bedroom (4 people) is an air conditioner. The other two bedrooms (one with a double bed and bathroom and the other with a (extendable) double bed) are at the back of the house and the thick walls provide coolness. There is a good WiFi network (via satellite) but you will not find any television there.
The house is on the 20 km long leg to Silves of the long distance walking route through the Algarve. There are also various other beautiful walks (including cultural walk around Messines) and in the peaceful surroundings of, for example, the Fungo Barragem dam. It can be very nice to walk around in the villages. E.g. along the sources of the most typical Algarve (located nearby) village of Alte with its picturesque white houses and nice souvenirs such as honey, earthenware. Monchique is also known for its beautiful nature. The village of Amorosa is a 5-minute drive away and has beautiful colored houses with beautiful chimneys.
Messines' main claim to fame is being the birthplace of one of Portugal's most famous poets, Joao de Deus, who resided there in the 19th century. His famous Cartilha Maternal was used to learn Portuguese in the 19th and 20th centuries. Messines is a quiet town of less than 10,000 inhabitants and with a few churches and various restaurants, some of which can also be found on the roads outside the village. Within walking distance (750 m) is a supermarket where you can get everything and also a cafe. The store opens at 8:30 am and is located on Rua João de Deus street, next to the gas station.
A little further in the center is a covered market where you can also find vegetables, fruit and fish. Fish lovers can also enjoy themselves in Silves and Albufeira where you have plenty of choice in restaurants.
For a bit more liveliness, the picturesque town of Silves is not far away (19 km, less than 20 minutes on a winding road). Here you can find the beautiful castle and museum. If you climb up you have to look back how many storks you can see. In the breeding season there are more than a thousand. Silves also has an indoor swimming pool for lovers of longer laps.
Just along the east side of Messines, the A2 motorway runs from Lisbon to Albufeira, leaving the beach, surfing and supping, karting and nightlife only a 25-minute drive away. In the summer it is also spectacular to have yourself picked up in the center of Messines for a (half or full) day of jeep safari. Also for (smaller) children there is plenty to do in the area: Zoo-Marine water park with great dolphin shows, zoo and much more!
